Artist's Comments

This winged key necklace is a wonderful, simple piece of steampunk jewelry.

The vintage skeleton key has darkened with age and shows a bit of softness. The bit of rust has been carefully scrubbed away but you can see how time has affected the steel, leaving it slightly pitted and worn.

A set of delicate wings flank the shaft of the key, framing it in silvery detail. I've kept the design simple. It has a few tiny gears taken from vintage pocket watches and old wind up wrist watches. There are 3 gears at the top - but I like the jagged edged gear near the bottom. Beside that gear you'll see a tiny jewel taken from a vintage wrist watch with a tiny "ruby" in it. Its very, very small!

The key itself is 7cm long - about 2.75inches. Still, despite its length it is quite light.

I managed to put it up on etsy this weekend, finally. I'm so behind these days. its over at [link]

Awesome as usual! I've been meaning to ask you, do you use glue or solder to put your pieces together?

That's lovely.

I had to hang a key from a necklace myself recently, and it having a similar "handle" I did something similar with jump rings to two points on the chain it hung from.

Mind you, It wasn't nearly so fancy as what you have here.

I was wondering where you happened to get the key from...I actually have the exact same one that I wear in the form of a necklace. I got it from a friend, who said that he had found the key on the street...

What a coincidence. o_O

really depends. I've got some pieces (most don't make it to here) that are soldered. I use a few diff glues as well... really depends on the "what to what". :D

thank kindly... :D
I've got some keys with tops that make it very difficult to get to hang correctly. I'm thinking of trying to solder them - but the materials are difficult. oh well.. i'll figure something out.

i would love to see your design.
