I did this piece for the Gallery show. Although it didn't sell I think it got a lot of attention because of its size. The key itself it 8cm long - just over 3inches.
This is one of the larger keys I have and I found just the perfect wings to go with it. They are a warm brass/gold and black with fantastic detailing. The key itself is a time darkened silver - almost as dark as some of the detail in the wing.
Along the length of the key I've placed a garnet set in silver - the heart of this key. It's a deep, dark red.
The special feature of this piece though is in the "head" of the key. There is a very nice escapement wheel in brass - that looks almost like a sun with rays. Behind it though... is a very special gear taken from a pocket watch.
When I opened the watch - which was grimed by time and age - there was a fingerprint clearly on the wheel from the watch maker or perhaps someone who had done repairs. I varnished it immediately in order to preserve the print. It made for a very special piece. I know someone will love it. I know I'll be happy to keep it just for the fingerprint if no one ever buys it. heh
wow! That is absolutley stunning! My husband is a goldsmith/jeweller & loves making items that are unusual, he's been commisioned to make a few items for the freemasons, mainly replicas of old pieces. This is the kind of thing they'd have. Is this an original idea? Either way it's fabulous!

I think its fairly original. at least in this shape, with the key. I like wings - and I believe that Gabriel is supposed to have 4000 sets of them. It made sense that this would be a key from one of the few named angels.
My favorite part though is the centre - which looks (to me) a bit like an eye. I was reminded by something my mother quoted when i made this. ( And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire). good ole Mum
I felt a deep connection to the person who had touched the wheel... and left their fingerprint on the material. It felt like a moment of connection across time when I found it... and probably it is my favorite part of this piece. The red garnet looks like a heart.
yes.. i felt a real shock opening the watch up.. it was an old broken pocket watch - really grimed up. There was a crack in the movement.. and some wooden pegs too. (so someone once tried to do a repair I think). it even smelled of old grease.

I also understand, that at a certain point in human evolution, something went horribly horribly wrong.
